it doesn’t matter that the quran explicitly says that homosexuals should be stoned to death (7:84) - it’s still a religion of peace.
and it doesn’t matter that the scriptures say that all gay men should be killed (sunan 1:152) - islam doesn’t in anyway condone violence.. it doesn’t matter that every mainstream imam calls homosexuality a sin "worse the adultery" - it’s not a religion of bigotry.. it doesn’t matter that 61% of muslims in the uk think gay acts should be made illegal - islam has nothing against the gay community.. it doesn’t matter that countries with sharia law actively persecute the lgbt community - islam is all about peace and love.

It is useless to conflate all Islam and Jihadi wolves. there are over 1 and a half billion muslims in the world and even if you say that Islam itself is not a religion of peace and that it is a religion of bigotry and violence then you need to ask why has this not influenced those millions to do the same.
-Ruby456Well that's just the problem isn't it? It DOES influence millions to do the same. A gunman kills forty-nine people in a a gay club and it's an act of terror. But in Saudi Arabia homosexuals are killed in full public view - and it's an act of "justice". Or a gunman kills the entire staff of Charlie Hebdo because they insulted the profit and everybody in the Western World loses their minds. But when ex-Muslims are regularly killed in Indonesia for simply converting to Christianity - nobody even notices.
Muslims regularly threaten to kill - and actually do kill - anyone who doesn't act in accordance with THEIR beliefs. Fathers carry out honor killings against their "impure" daughters. Whole towns stone unfaithful women to death. Dozens of countries imprison or outright kill homosexuals and apostates are decapitated and their heads displayed for everyone to see. "Terrorists" are a fraction of the problem. If you want to see the true horrors of Islam look at the dozens of countries that have Sharia Law. Or look at secular countries with newly established Muslim communities.

I am glad that in the US the vast majority of Muslims have integrated into Western Society and view these things as barbaric. But this is the exception - not the rule. Mainstream Islam is not nearly so tolerant.

Coded Logic
I have friends in the gay community that are from Pakistan and Syria. Both have been here for just over a year and both of them have had no trouble integrating into Western Society or even gay culture.
However, I do have friends that are practicing Christians, Hindus, and Jews and all them have difficulty reconciling their religion with their lives. It's not an ethnic problem. It's a religious one.

I can't help but feel sorry for Momin Rahman and his undisciplined thinking. The idea that people are centralizing their identity around the teachings of a seventh century war lord is not something to be proud of or take comfort in.
There are plenty of things worth believing in. And there are nearly an infinite number of worthwhile pursuits. But the supernatural and the occult are not among them.
To think that people need religion to have a cultural or social identity is not only wrong - it's dangerous. Meaning is not something that can be handed out to the masses or pushed upon us from the pulpit. The spiritual part of our human existence is our private journey as we figure out who we are and what sort of person we want to be. The examined life.
Far too many people forsake the precious gems of intellectual honesty because they're distracted by the fools gold of simplicity and the false promise of certainty.

This week has been a really difficult past couple of days. Waking up to the news on Sunday that some jihadist jackass had slaughtered so many of my LGBT brothers and sisters left me reeling and in tears. We're a community with common cause and a common struggle and it's immensely painful to see the loss of so many young and beautiful lives.
I think this kind of solidarity is something everyone understands - gay or straight. But something many straight people might not have consider is the importance of having gay clubs in our communities. For many of us, it’s the only place we feel that we can really be ourselves. It’s the only place where we can hold hands or kiss our partner without getting fifty sideways looks or hearing whispers. It’s the only place where we can give a compliment to someone we find attractive without worrying about getting punched in the face. And for those like me who grew up in a deeply homophobic religion - it was the first place we ever found people who accepted us . . . for us.
To call a gay club a “sanctuary” is not a hyperbole. It’s so much more than a dance club or a singles club or a place to relax and drink a beer. It’s also a home of acceptance. A fortress of tolerance. And a beacon hope. It's the idea that when you come here you don't have to worry about the discomfort of phobia of others. You can just be . . . you. No act. No pretense. No hiding. And that’s what makes the terrorizing events of Sunday morning just that much more horrific. Because - in the one place where we thought it was safe to be ourselves - someone visited upon us the worst shooting in US history.
That night here in Sacramento we held a vigil for those who were injured and for those who died. I didn’t know how but I hoped we would begin to heal and find a way to regain some semblance of safety . . .

. . . and then I heard the rant yesterday by Pastor Roger Jimenez about how, “The real tragedy is more of them didn’t die.”
What a hate filled religious little troll I thought to myself. He’s probably some nobody with a congregation of like ten people in the backwaters of Missouri or Alabama or something . . . (Google) . . . wtf? - he lives here in Sacramento? . . . wtf! His church is right up the street from me? . . . WTF! His congregation is standing by what he said and he’s holding a sermon on the topic tonight!!!!!
It was short notice but at least a hundred of us showed up and protested out in front of the church. We chanted, “Se-pa-rate church-and-hate” and “We are one pulse” (after the name of the club). We sang songs about love. And we held hands and read allowed the names of the forty-nine victims.
It was nice to see so many Christians there supporting the LGBT community and saying they don’t condone hate. The religion, as a whole, has come a long ways. I know there’s still a lot of bad ideas and intolerance but I genuinely do hope they continue their trend of moving towards humanist values.
On Sunday we’re going to protest again. But as we actually have time to organize and it’s on a weekend our group will be a lot larger. Already 800 people have signed up to come. And if any of you are in the area and want to speak out against hate I hope you will come too. We're all still hurting and your moral support would be much appreciated.
For everyone else on this forum, I’ll try to keep you posted and let you know how it goes And please never be a spectator to intolerance or bigotry. Speak up. Speak out. It may not change the behavior of aggressor but it means the world to those who are marginalized when they realize they're not fighting alone.

And while we're in the subject, different Islamic leaders have come out in public to denounce this latest crime. Can we, from this point forward, get Christian leaders to come out in public and denounce the crimes committed by people that call themselves Christians???

We're not talking about crimes committed by people who happen to be Muslim. We're talking about mass murder being carried out in the name of ISLAM. There's a HUGE difference!
One is the actions of individuals acting of their own volitional. The other is individuals motivated by a specific religious ideology. -

Hate manifests itself regardless of the religious beliefs.
-DYNo, this sort of hate manifests itself because of the religious beliefs. The religious beliefs incite people to do these horrible things. And their actions are, in turn, justified because of their dogmatic faith in their religion.
When JWs let their children die because of the blood issue - we call out the RELIGION. We don't try to equivocate or say, "Well you know there are a lot of bad doctors out there and no wonder JWs don't trust modern medicine."
Islam should be held to the exact same standard! When Muslims are motivated to do horrific things by their religion we need to call out the RELIGION.
Islam is not a monolith. Lots of different Muslims believe lots of different things. And there's no way Islam is going to be reformed if we aren't actively calling out the bigotry, hatred, and intolerance far too many of its members perpetuate because of their dogmatic and iron age convictions.
